Tashkent to Khiva Transport Guide 2026: Trains, Flights & Cars

Getting from Tashkent (Uzbekistan's bustling capital) to Khiva (an ancient desert fortress near the Turkmenistan border) is the longest journey most tourists make on the Silk Road. The distance is roughly 1,000 kilometers (620 miles).

Because of the massive distance, choosing the wrong transport can cost you an entire day of your vacation. Here is exactly how to get from Tashkent to Khiva in 2026, including the harsh truth about sold-out train tickets and why flying is often the smartest choice.

Summary: Which Option is Best for You?

Domestic Flight1.5 Hours$60 - $80Maximizing sightseeing time
Night Sleeper Train14 Hours$25 - $45Budget travelers & authentic experience
Afrosiyob (Fast Train)N/AN/ADoes not run to Khiva!
Private Car13-15 Hours$150+People who want to stop at sights on the way

Option 1: Domestic Flight from Tashkent to Khiva (Urgench)

The absolute best way to travel this distance.

Important geographical note: Khiva does not have its own airport. You must fly into Urgench International Airport (UGC), which is a 30-minute drive from Khiva's old city walls.

The Airlines

There are two airlines operating this route daily:

  1. Uzbekistan Airways: The national carrier. Highly reliable. Usually operates an Airbus A320 on this route.
  2. Centrum Air: A newer private low-cost carrier. Slightly cheaper, but luggage limits are stricter.

Cost & Duration

  • Flight Time: 1 hour 30 minutes.
  • Cost: Usually between $60 and $80 USD one-way.
  • Frequency: Usually 1 to 2 flights every day (morning and late evening).

Pros & Cons

Pros: You save literally 13 hours of travel time. Cons: You miss the romance of the Soviet-era night trains.

How to Get from Urgench Airport to Khiva

When you land in Urgench, aggressive taxi drivers will swarm you.

  • Haggling: You should pay roughly 50,000 to 80,000 Som ($4 - $6 USD) for a taxi to Khiva. Do not accept the first offer of 150,000 Som.
  • Yandex Go: The Yandex taxi app does work in Urgench, making this much easier.
  • Private Transfer: The most stress-free option is booking a driver in advance.

Option 2: The Night Train (Tashkent to Khiva)

The most popular option for backpackers and those wanting a "classic Silk Road" experience.

The harsh truth about train tickets in 2026

Tickets for the night train go on sale 45 days in advance. During peak seasons (April-May and September-October), third-party agencies buy out the entire train within minutes of the tickets going live. If you are traveling in spring or autumn, you must book exactly 45 days in advance on the official Railway.uz website or app.

Ticket Classes on the Night Train

There are no Afrosiyob (high-speed) trains that go all the way to Khiva. You will be on a classic Soviet-style sleeper train (Train numbers typically 056 or 054).

  • Lyux (Lyux / VIP): 2 beds per cabin. Very hard to get. Cost: ~$45 USD.
  • Kupe (Kupe / 2nd Class): 4 beds per cabin (bunk beds) with a sliding door. The best balance of price and privacy. Cost: ~$30 USD.
  • Platzkart (Platzkart / 3rd Class): An open carriage with 54 beds and no doors. Very loud, very hot, and zero privacy, but a great way to meet locals sharing food. Cost: ~$20 USD.

Duration

The night train usually departs Tashkent around 8:30 PM and arrives at Khiva Railway Station (which is walking distance to the old city walls) around 11:00 AM the next day. Total time: 14.5 hours.

Option 3: The Day Train

There is occasionally a day train that takes 14 hours.

Our Verdict: Do not do this. You will waste an entire day of sunlight staring at a repetitive desert landscape. If you are going to take the train, take the night train so you can sleep through the journey.

Option 4: Private Car or Taxi

Driving from Tashkent to Khiva takes 13 to 15 hours non-stop. The road quality varies drastically; some sections are modern highways, and others are pothole-filled dirt roads that will rattle your spine.

Our Verdict: Only hire a private driver from Tashkent to Khiva if you intentionally want to turn it into a multi-day road trip to see things along the way (like the Aral Sea or Nurata). Otherwise, it is an exhausting, bone-shaking journey that costs twice as much as a flight.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Afrosiyob high-speed train go to Khiva? No. The Afrosiyob currently only runs from Tashkent to Samarkand and Bukhara. There is a massive infrastructure project to extend the tracks to Khiva, but as of 2026, it is not operational yet.

Can I buy train tickets at the station on the day of travel? During the summer or winter (low season), yes. During April, May, September, and October? Absolutely not. Trains sell out weeks in advance.

How much luggage can I bring on the night train? Officially, up to 36kg per person. Unofficially, as long as you can lift it and store it under the bottom bunk or in the overhead storage bin, nobody weighs it.
