Uzbekistan Tourist Registration (OVIR): Complete 2026 Guide

Last updated: January 2026

Heard about "registration" in Uzbekistan and confused about what it means? You're not alone. This guide explains everything about the tourist registration system (also called OVIR registration).

Quick Answer: Do You Need to Register?

Where You're StayingRegistration Needed?Who Does It?
Hotel✅ YesHotel (automatic)
Hostel✅ YesHostel (automatic)
Guesthouse✅ YesGuesthouse (automatic)
Airbnb⚠️ DependsHost or you
Friend's house✅ YesYou (at OVIR)
Couchsurfing✅ YesYou (at OVIR)

Bottom line: If you stay at registered accommodation (hotels, hostels, guesthouses), you don't need to do anything. The property registers you automatically.

What is Tourist Registration?

Uzbekistan requires all foreign visitors to register their location within 3 days of arrival (and any time you change cities).

Why? It's a holdover from Soviet times, but still enforced. The government wants to know where tourists are staying.

What happens? You get a small paper slip showing:

  • Your name
  • Passport number
  • Dates of stay
  • Address

How Hotel Registration Works

When you check into any licensed accommodation:

  1. You hand over your passport at check-in
  2. Hotel makes a copy
  3. Hotel registers you electronically
  4. You get a registration slip (keep this!)
  5. You get your passport back

That's it. Nothing else required from you.

What the Registration Slip Looks Like

Important: Keep ALL registration slips from your trip!

Do I Need Continuous Registration?

Yes. You need registration slips covering every night of your stay in Uzbekistan.

Example: 10-Day Trip

NightsLocationRegistration By
1-3Tashkent HotelHotel
4-5Samarkand HostelHostel
6-8Bukhara GuesthouseGuesthouse
9-10Khiva HotelHotel

At departure: You should have 4 registration slips, covering all 10 nights.

What If I Stay with Friends/Airbnb?

If your accommodation is not a registered hotel/hostel, YOU must register yourself.

Option 1: Ask Your Host to Register You

Some Airbnb hosts and local friends can register you if they:

  • Own the property
  • Have proper documents
  • Are willing to visit OVIR

Ask before booking!

Option 2: Register Yourself at OVIR

OVIR = Department of Entry, Exit and Citizenship (formerly Visa and Registration)

What you need:

  • Your passport
  • Migration card (given at airport)
  • Address where you're staying
  • Host's passport copy (sometimes required)

Where to go:

  • Each city has an OVIR office
  • Ask your host or Google "OVIR + city name"

Process:

  • Fill out forms
  • Wait in line
  • Pay small fee (~$3-5)
  • Receive registration slip

Tip: OVIR offices are for you, but it's time-consuming. Most travelers just stay in hotels.

What Happens If I Don't Register?

At Airport Departure

Immigration officers may ask to see your registration slips.

ScenarioLikely Outcome
All nights covered✅ No problem
1-2 nights missing⚠️ Warning or small fine
Many nights missing⚠️ Fine ($50-200)
No registration at all⚠️ Bigger fine, possible delays

Reality check: Many travelers report never being asked. But it's not worth the risk. Just save your hotel slips.

During Your Trip

Police can technically ask for registration, but this is extremely rare for tourists.

Practical Tips

1. Always Keep Your Slips

Put all registration slips in one place:

  • Passport holder
  • Dedicated envelope
  • Photo on your phone (backup)

2. Check Your Slip at Checkout

Verify:

  • Name spelled correctly
  • Dates are accurate
  • You have the slip (hotels sometimes forget to give it)

3. Night Trains Count

Sleeping on a train = no registration needed for that night. The train ticket serves as proof.

4. Same-Day City Visits

If you visit a city as a day trip (no overnight), no registration needed there.

5. 72-Hour Rule

You have 72 hours (3 days) after arrival to get your first registration. Don't panic on day 1.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do I need to carry registration slips with me?

A: Not required, but recommended. Keep them safe in your bag.

Q: What if a hotel forgets to give me the slip?

A: Ask for it! They're required to provide it.

Q: Can I get in trouble for gaps in registration?

A: Small gaps (1 night) usually aren't a problem. Multiple nights could lead to a fine.

Q: Is registration different from a visa?

A: Yes. Visa = permission to enter. Registration = record of where you stay.

Q: What about transit in airports?

A: Transit zones don't require registration.

Q: Do children need registration?

A: Yes, all foreigners regardless of age.

Summary: Registration Checklist

✅ Stay at hotels/hostels/guesthouses (they register you) ✅ Keep all registration slips ✅ Save train tickets for overnight journeys ✅ Verify dates on slips at checkout ✅ Have slips ready at airport departure (just in case)
