Uzbekistan Border Crossings 2026: Surviving Tajikistan & Kyrgyzstan Borders
Crossing a Central Asian land border is often the most stressful part of a Silk Road trip. While the visa processes have improved massively by 2026, the physical reality of crossing the border—walking through no-man’s land and dealing with aggressive border taxi drivers—is still a challenge.
Here is your definitive guide to crossing into Uzbekistan from Tajikistan (Panjakent) and Kyrgyzstan (Dostuk), and how to avoid getting scammed the moment you step into Uzbekistan.
1. Tajikistan to Uzbekistan (The Jartepa / Panjakent Border)
This is the most popular border crossing for tourists combining the Fann Mountains of Tajikistan with the Silk Road cities of Uzbekistan.
- Location: 40km east of Samarkand, 20km west of Panjakent.
- Hours of Operation: Generally 08:00 to 20:00 (Check local holidays, as it can close unexpectedly).
The Crossing Process
- Exiting Tajikistan: You will be dropped off by a Tajik driver at the gate. Walk into the Tajik customs building. They will stamp you out. It usually takes 10-15 minutes.
- No-Man's Land: You will walk about 500 meters with your luggage through a fenced corridor to the Uzbek side.
- Entering Uzbekistan: Present your passport (and E-Visa if required for your nationality). Your bags will run through an X-ray machine. They may ask if you have a drone (drones are strictly illegal in Uzbekistan) or certain medications (like Codeine).
The Problem: The Samarkand Taxi Mafia
The moment you exit the Uzbek border control, you will be swarmed by 20 to 30 aggressive taxi drivers shouting "Samarkand! Samarkand!".
- There is no public bus that goes all the way from the border to Samarkand city.
- The Scam: They will demand $30 to $50 USD for a 40-minute drive. If you agree to a shared "marshrutka" (minivan) price (usually 30,000 Som / $2.50), they will wait 2 hours until the van is completely full before leaving.
The Solution
Do not start your Uzbekistan vacation fighting with taxi drivers. We provide reliable, English-speaking drivers who will be waiting for you directly outside the border gate holding a sign with your name. They will drive you straight to your hotel in Samarkand in an air-conditioned car.

2. Kyrgyzstan to Uzbekistan (The Dostuk / Andijan Border)
This is the primary crossing if you are traveling from Osh (Kyrgyzstan) to the Fergana Valley and Tashkent.
- Location: Between Osh (Kyrgyzstan) and Andijan (Uzbekistan).
- Hours of Operation: 24/7 (This is a major commercial border).
The Crossing Process
This border is incredibly busy. You will be crossing alongside hundreds of locals, traders, and large trucks.
- Exiting Kyrgyzstan: Very fast. Hand over your passport, get the exit stamp.
- Entering Uzbekistan: The queues here can be long, and there is little shade. In the summer, it can be brutally hot.
The Problem: Onward Transport
Once you cross the Dostuk border, you are in the Fergana Valley.
- To Andijan: You must negotiate with a local taxi to Andijan (about 45 minutes).
- To Tashkent: To get to Tashkent, you must either take a 5-hour shared taxi ride over the Kamchik Pass (which can be terrifying with local drivers) or take a taxi to the Andijan railway station and catch the train to Tashkent (which must be booked weeks in advance).
The Solution
The Fergana Valley is beautiful but difficult to navigate if you don't speak Russian or Uzbek. We highly recommend hiring a local guide or driver to take you through the Fergana Valley safely.

3. General Border Crossing Rules for 2026
- Drones are Illegal: Do not bring a drone across the border. It will be confiscated, and you will be fined heavily. There are zero exceptions.
- Medication: Codeine, sleeping pills, and strong painkillers (like Tramadol) are heavily restricted. Bring a doctor's prescription if you must carry them, and declare them.
- Pornography: It is illegal to bring pornography into Uzbekistan. Border guards have the right to ask you to unlock your phone and view your photo gallery, although this is becoming less common for Western tourists.
- Cash Declarations: If you are carrying more than $10,000 USD (or equivalent) in cash, you MUST declare it on a customs form. If you carry less, you no longer need to declare it upon entry.
